Reflect on your assignments with the Demand Control Schema (DC-S)

SignPrep is a free app for sign language interpreters, on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Its reflections follow the Demand Control Schema by Dean & Pollard: you note the demands you faced, the controls you used and their consequences, then what went well and what to change.

What does a DC-S reflection in SignPrep cover?

One scrolling page titled New Reflection, with six headings in order: Link to an Assignment, Assignment Details, What Demands Did You Face?, Controls & Consequences, Learning & Follow-up, and Self-Care Check-in.

  • Free-text fields for environmental, interpersonal, paralinguistic, and intrapersonal demands, then controls, consequences, what went well, and what to change
  • A Self-Care Check-in with Physical Fatigue, Emotional Load, and Cognitive Load ratings, and a Self-Care Action field
  • On Apple Intelligence devices, a Suggest button on the Environmental, Interpersonal, Paralinguistic, Intrapersonal, Controls Used, and Consequences fields, which runs on your device

Open it with + on the Reflection tab, or from an assignment’s After group. More on Reflections.

How can I practise identifying demands?

On the Reflection tab, Learn About DC-S opens the reference and Identify the Demand Quiz tests your ability to categorise demands in real interpreting scenarios.

Can I take a reflection to my mentor?

Yes. Flag for Mentor Discussion sits at the foot of Learning & Follow-up. Once a flagged reflection is saved, an Export This Reflection as PDF button appears.

Can I export my DC-S reflections?

Yes. A single reflection exports as a PDF from its own screen with Export to PDF, always the full version.

To export many at once, go to Settings › Reflection Export: Export All as PDF, Export All as CSV, and Export by Date Range. Each asks for a Full or an Anonymised version:

  • Full includes the assignment title and your written fields
  • Anonymised uses a generic title and removes likely identifiers on your device, and it is blocked if a possible identifier remains

Exports from Settings show what they keep and remove before you share them, and sharing asks for Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. SignPrep never uploads an exported file by itself; you decide what to do with it. The privacy policy explains how exports leave the app.

What do my reflections show over time?

The Reflection tab lists your reflections with colour-coded load level dots, and a stats card shows totals, this month’s count, flagged entries, and Best Streak, which counts consecutive calendar weeks with at least one reflection. If your last three reflections show sustained load, SignPrep shows a high-load alert.

Frequently asked questions

Do reflections need to be linked to a calendar event?

No. You can write a standalone reflection at any time. When the reflection isn’t linked to an assignment, an Assignment Type dropdown appears, defaulting to the domain you’ve set in Settings. When it is linked, the domain is pulled from the assignment automatically.

Why do the self-care check-in buttons have colours?

To make load levels legible at a glance: green for Low, orange for Medium, and red for High, across Physical Fatigue, Emotional Load, and Cognitive Load. At accessibility text sizes, the row becomes a menu picker so labels always fit.

Is my data private?

Your SignPrep data is stored on your devices: there is no account, and SignPrep keeps no copy of it. Some features can send what they need to a service such as Apple or Google, and the privacy policy lists each one and what it sends.
